None of us women over 50 want to sit at home bored this winter. Unless you are cuddling up and catching a movie or binge-watching, we all want to be active. Some of us like to be active outdoors earning a sweat while others like to create new artistic creations.

With us being well into winter, being outdoors and active is not an option for all of us women over 50. Here are five activities that many of us enjoy and you can too!

Learn a new language

Broaden your horizons and meet new people. Many colleges and community centers offer language courses. You will not only learn a new skill but exercise your brain. As we age, mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise. Choose the language of a foreign country that you would like to visit and have on your bucket list. This will give you a little motivation for planning that trip!

Take up Pilates

Pilates is a great exercise to pick up over the winter months. Since you need to be indoors and don’t want to run on the spot with a treadmill, pilates would be ideal for indoor exercise. Pilates increases your muscle strength and tone, particularly of your abdominal muscles, lower back, hips, and buttocks. It also increases your flexibility, balancing your body.

Take your grandkids out

Quality time with the ones that we love is always special. Getting to enjoy your grandkids is extra special. Take them out without their parents to build a stronger relationship. Kids love to go to the library, museum or out for ice cream.  If you love crafts, you can take your grandkids to a pottery painting shop. Here you can create a gift to cherish every time that you drink from your customized coffee mug. Your own kids will appreciate the break too!


Volunteering provides many benefits to both mental and physical health. Beyond the benefits that the organization can achieve from your efforts, you can get out of the house and involved. By volunteering, you will bring joy not only to those that you help but yourself too. You will have an opportunity to take your mind off your life and relax. Remember that we all have value and experience to offer. Your life path has equipped you to assist someone else and even add encouragement.

Get to a Spa

As women over 50, you have many responsibilities and hats to wear. You fit into the most torn demographic. You have your children (possibly grandchildren) tugging you in one direction and your elderly parents needing you in the other. Beyond these demands, you have work and other commitments. Get out and enjoy a massage or facial by yourself or a close girlfriend!

Life is meant for living and in the middle of winter, we can easily start to feel down and depressed. Getting busy and participating in various activities will raise your spirits and give you purpose.  Before you know it, it will be spring and warmer weather will be bursting forth. These activities will not only have kept you busy over the winter but introduced you to new people. New friends to enjoy the summertime with!
