While it may be difficult to generalize party ideas, it can be done. There are basics that you need, no matter what type of party you are having.

While a clown might not be the ideal option for a wedding reception and the right slow songs from the DJ may not be perfect for a kid’s birthday party, you still need music and entertainment for both.

Here are four tips to keep in mind the next time you are planning a party of any kind. It’s always important to start with a plan.

Figure Out The Guest List

Determine who you are inviting to your party. That may be dependant on what type of party you are having. If it’s an adult party with adult beverages you may not want people bringing their kids along. If it’s a kids party there may be less people to invite, but they you may also have to cater to parents.

Your guest list is going to determine your venue size, and even how much food and beverages you’re going to need to have.

Once you’ve got this and the rest of the steps done you’ll need to work on your invitations. Remember to put on them whether a guest is allowed or not. You may want to request that guests RSVP by a certain date so you can make sure you don’t have too much or too little food.

Picking The Right Venue

While your own backyard may be the perfect spot for a child’s birthday party, you may want something a little more extravagant for a wedding reception. You want to make sure that you can cover whatever items your venue doesn’t supply.

A nice hall or rented room at a resort is likely to cater to your seating and table needs. You just have to figure out the seating arrangements. They may also take care of table covering and serving the food.

If you’re having the party at home you’ll need to come up with enough seating. If it’s outdoors you need to be prepared for bugs and weather too.

Planning The Music And Entertainment

Your music and entertainment will depend on party type and could even depend on the theme of your party. Wedding receptions can have DJs or live bands. Or you may want to just rent speakers and stream your own playlist to save money.

Children’s parties can have music too, as well as clowns and magicians. Entertainment may simply be your guests, if you have a costume party!

Food And Drinks

If you’re having an adult party, your options are pretty open for drinks. If you’re having it at home or you’re supplying the alcohol, set up a self-serve bar. If your party is at a venue it will likely be a cash bar unless you pay up front to cover drinks for everyone. You can also have it byob.

For kids, set up a punch bowl or get some dispensing coolers for lemonade and other kid friendly drinks.

Food also depends on your venue. You can have catered, even at home. Or you can do it potluck style. Have a table set up with crock pots and places to plug them into keeps hot foods hot. Tubs of ice are perfect for keep cold food colds, but try not to leave them out for more than an hour and give your guests all food poisoning!
